Why Elliot

EM Tutoring is one person.

I’m Elliot McClure. I’ve spent more than ten years teaching high school students one-on-one, and the pattern I keep seeing is that a score plateau is rarely a knowledge problem. More often it’s a habits problem — how a student paces themselves, how they read a question under time pressure, and what they do in the moment they get stuck.

My training is in neuroscience and pharmacy, which is an unusual background for a tutor. It is also the reason I teach the way I do: I was trained to look at behavior, measure what actually changes, and adjust based on evidence rather than on what is supposed to work.

Education

Training

  • 2019

BA, Neuroscience & Psychology — Vanderbilt University

I assisted research investigating the subjective effects of amphetamines using multiple brain imaging techniques.

  • 2023

PharmD, Doctor of Pharmacy — Lipscomb University

Alongside coursework and clinical hours, my research covered the synthesis of novel compounds with potential application in Parkinson’s disease, and the evaluation of preclinical compounds for cognitive decline.

Approach

No two students are taught the same way

Rather than run a preset curriculum, I build around the student in front of me — their course load, their goals, and how they actually process information. Drawing on behavioral and neuropsychological principles, I work out how a student’s particular differences shape their performance, then adapt pacing and mentorship to match.

If your student has ADHD, dyslexia, autism, or any other learning difference, it is worth telling me up front. There is an optional field for it on the contact form.
